Set Up an Observation Template With Age- and Sex-Specific Reference Ranges

Who / when: Dr. Bello, the lab admin, sets up an observation template once so that every matching result is flagged correctly thereafter; Chika sees the right normal band and interpretation flag at the bench without doing anything. An observation template defines a result’s identity and the normal bands it is judged against. Getting the ranges right — and making them depend on the patient’s sex and age where biology demands it — is what lets Veona stamp a haemoglobin as Low for one patient and Normal for another.

Key terms: LOINC is the international standard lab-test code. A reference range is the normal band for a result; it can be conditional on the patient’s sex (any, male or female) and an age window (minimum and maximum years).

We’ll follow Dr. Bello defining a template and its ranges.

1. Lab Admin — open Labs → Observation Templates.
2. Lab Admin — create or open a template and set its identity: the name, the LOINC code, the unit, and the sample requirements — sample type (e.g. Serum), container (e.g. SST) and volume.
3. Lab Admin — add one or more reference ranges. For each, set the normal band, and where biology requires it, scope it to a sex (any, male or female) and an age window (minimum and maximum years). Add as many as you need to cover the patient populations the test serves.
4. Lab Admin — use the live preview to check your work: resolve the template against a chosen patient and a value to see which range applies and the resulting flag, before you rely on it at the bench.

Note

When a numeric result is recorded against the template, Veona picks the most specific matching range for that patient’s sex and age, shows the normal band (e.g. “12–15.5”), and stamps an interpretation flag — Normal, High, Low, Critical High or Critical Low. Coded or text results show the expected text but are not auto-flagged; the scientist asserts the verdict.

Caution

If a patient’s sex or birth date is missing, a sex- or age-bounded range won’t match and a less specific “any” range is used instead. Editing a template does not retroactively re-flag old results — the stamped range and flag are a snapshot at the time of the result. Deleting a template leaves old results’ flags intact but unlinked. Setting up and editing templates is a Lab Admin task.

What happens next

Once the template is right, every numeric result recorded against it carries the correct normal band and flag for that patient — without the scientist having to look anything up. That is what makes a released result self-explanatory on the chart and the portal: the value, the normal range, and whether it sits inside it.
