Glossary

These are the terms and acronyms you will meet across Veona, grouped by area. Veona keeps these acronyms in their established casing wherever they appear.

Patient and identity

Term	Meaning
UHID	Unique Health Identifier — Veona’s patient identifier (for example, VNA-12345).
MRN	Medical Record Number — a record identifier for a patient.
Encounter	One episode of care — a visit, admission, or consult — that clinical records attach to.
Requisition	A single diagnostics request that can hold both lab tests and imaging, splitting into separate orders behind the scenes.

Security and data protection

Term	Meaning
PHI	Protected Health Information — health data about an identifiable person.
PII	Personally Identifiable Information — data that identifies a person.
eSign	Electronic signature — applying your identity to a record.
eSign PIN	The 6-digit PIN you enter to sign a record; separate from your login password.
MFA	Multi-Factor Authentication — a second sign-in step on top of your password.
OTP	One-Time Passcode — a single-use code sent by email or SMS, or used in a magic link.
mTLS	Mutual TLS — both sides of a connection present certificates to prove identity.

Lab and blood bank

Term	Meaning
FEFO	First Expire, First Out — stock is drawn from the batch that expires soonest.
AOE	Ask-at-Order-Entry — questions answered when a lab test is ordered.
QC	Quality Control — checks that confirm lab results are reliable.
ABO	The ABO blood-group system (A, B, AB, O).
ISBT	International Society of Blood Transfusion — the standard for coding blood units.
TTI	Transfusion-Transmitted Infection — infections screened for before a unit is released.
TACO	Transfusion-Associated Circulatory Overload — a transfusion reaction.
TRALI	Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury — a transfusion reaction.
Crossmatch	The compatibility test between a patient and a blood unit before transfusion.

Clinical

Term	Meaning
DDI	Drug-Drug Interaction — a check that flags unsafe medication combinations.
EWS / NEWS2	Early Warning Score / National Early Warning Score 2 — vital-sign scores that flag a deteriorating patient.

Imaging

Term	Meaning
DICOM	Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine — the standard for imaging files.
PACS	Picture Archiving and Communication System — where images are stored and viewed.
MWL	Modality Worklist — the list of ordered studies sent down to an imaging device.
C-STORE	The DICOM operation a modality uses to send acquired images in.

Standards and interoperability

Term	Meaning
HL7	Health Level Seven — a healthcare messaging standard.
FHIR	Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources — a modern, web-based healthcare data standard.
ASTM	Lab-instrument communication protocols used by analysers.
LOINC	Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes — codes for lab tests and observations.
ICD (ICD-11)	International Classification of Diseases — the diagnosis coding system; Veona uses ICD-11.
ZPL	Zebra Programming Language — the format used to print barcode labels.
CRVS	Civil Registration and Vital Statistics — birth and death registration data.
DHIS2	District Health Information Software 2 — a public-health reporting platform Veona can export to.
