HR Manager

You look after the people. HR runs the whole employee lifecycle — hiring and onboarding, the org structure and roster, leave and attendance, payroll, appraisals and training. HR is part of Veona for everyone: it is free and always on, and every staff member gets an employee self-service hub for their own leave, shifts, expenses and payslips.

Several roles share this area, split so that one person does not both build and approve payroll. An HR manager runs the full HR administration. An HR officer handles employee and leave administration. A line manager approves their own team’s requests. Payroll is split between an officer who builds the pay run and an approver who posts it.

ESS is Employee Self-Service — every staff member’s own HR hub. CPD is Continuing Professional Development.

As an HR manager, you can:

  • Manage employees and the org — employee profiles, positions and grades.
  • Administer leave and shifts — leave types and balances, shift rosters and on-call rotas, and approve team requests.
  • Manage attendance — timesheets, clock reconciliation and overtime.
  • Build pay runs and own salary structures and statutory rules.
  • Run performance and training — appraisal cycles and the training catalogue, completions and CPD.
  • Manage credentials and compliance — staff licences, the document vault, professional memberships and committee/union records.
  • Run recruitment — requisitions, postings, candidates, offers and convert-on-hire.
  • Handle disciplinary, grievance and benefits cases and plans.
  • Manage approval delegations so approvals route while someone is away.
  • An HR officer handles employee, position and leave administration, credentials, training and recruitment — but not payroll or salary structures.
  • A line manager approves their own team’s leave, shift swaps and expenses, runs their team’s appraisals, and interviews candidates.
  • A payroll officer builds pay runs and salary structures. A payroll approver approves and posts them.

Payroll is deliberately split: the person who builds a pay run is not the person who approves and posts it. An HR manager builds payroll but does not approve it; the approver approves but does not build. A line manager can approve only their own team’s requests, not configure HR. Disciplinary files are confidential — they are not exposed through anyone’s self-service. Every staff member can manage their own leave, shifts, expenses and payslips through their hub, but cannot see anyone else’s.

  1. Open Recruitment (HR) to move candidates along — postings, interviews, offers — and convert a hire, which kicks off onboarding.
  2. Review and approve the day’s leave and shift-swap requests from the team.
  3. Keep credentials and compliance current — chase any licence nearing expiry.
  4. As payroll cut-off nears, the payroll officer builds the pay run; the payroll approver then approves and posts it, which flows into the books.
  5. Run appraisal and training cycles, and keep approval delegations set so nothing stalls while someone is away.
