Let the Patient Join From the Portal

Who / when: the Patient, at the time of their video visit, from their patient portal. This is the patient half of the join — the step that puts them in the same video room as the provider who already started the consult. A “single-use grant” is a one-time pass that Veona checks before it mints the actual video-room token, so a link cannot be reused or shared into a call that is not the patient’s own.

The patient does not install anything or dial a number. Their telehealth visit shows up on the portal with a join control, and when they tap it Veona verifies that this is their consult, mints a fresh room token scoped to exactly that room, and drops them in. We will follow Amina, joining her follow-up from her phone.

1. Patient — sign in to the portal. (Veona’s portal uses passwordless sign-in — a one-time code or a secure magic link rather than a password to remember; see Sign In Passwordless With a Magic Link.)
2. Patient — open the Telehealth area of the portal. Amina’s consult is listed with her provider’s name and the visit time.
3. Patient — when it is time, press “Join Consult”. If the visit is not yet within its join window, the control reads “Not yet” — which is correct; she can join once the window opens.
4. Patient — Veona checks that this consult belongs to Amina, then mints a single-use room token and connects her into the same video room as Dr. Okafor. The visit begins.

Note

The grant is bound to the patient and to that one consult. Joining only works for the patient’s own visit — a request against someone else’s consult is refused, and a consult that has already been completed cannot be re-joined. There is no shared room link that could let the wrong person in.

What happens next

Amina and her clinician are now in the same room. The visit proceeds as a normal consultation — the provider documents into the one encounter that starting the consult opened, and ends the consult when they are done. Once it ends, Amina sees the visit marked complete on her portal, and any recording that was kept (with consent) becomes available to her there.
