Admit an Emergency Patient to a Ward

Who / when: the ED Physician, once an emergency patient has been worked up and the decision is to keep them in hospital — and the Ward Nurse, who receives them on the ward board. “Disposition” is the word for the outcome decision at the end of an emergency visit: admit, refer, discharge or transfer. This guide covers admit.

1. ED Physician — open ED → Disposition. The worklist shows every active emergency visit waiting on a decision. Open the patient you want to admit.
2. ED Physician — in the disposition panel, choose “Admit”. The form expands to ask where the patient is going.
3. ED Physician — pick the destination ward from the ward picker, then confirm the disposition. Veona records the admit decision against the emergency encounter.
4. ED Physician — to complete the bed move, select “Admit to ward”. This hands the patient off to Veona Ward through the shared clinical spine (the one place that owns encounters, wards, beds and admissions), which opens the admission and occupies a free bed in one atomic step. An admissionId is returned — the same admission the ward will see.
5. Ward Nurse — open Ward → Ward Board. The patient now appears on the ward, and the bed they were given shows as Occupied. From here the ward takes over: observations, the medication record, rounds and, eventually, discharge.

Note

You do not re-register the patient or re-key their details. The same emergency encounter and the patient’s UHID (their permanent VNA-… number) carry straight into the admission — the clinical spine keeps it one continuous record from the front door to the ward bed.

Tip

Admitting from the ED is the same destination as a planned ward admission — only the front door differs. Once the patient is on the ward board, the ward team follows the standard inpatient path. See Admit a Patient to a Ward Bed for the receiving end in full.

What happens next

The patient is now an inpatient. The ward nurse records observations with an early-warning score, gives medication against the MAR (Medication Administration Record), and runs nursing rounds — and when the patient is well enough, the ward discharges them and frees the bed, settling the final bill.
