Midwife & Obstetrician

You care for mothers and newborns across the maternity journey: antenatal visits, labour and the partograph, delivery, newborn registration, and — for an obstetrician — issuing the birth certificate.

Two roles share this area, with the obstetrician holding the extra certifying and module-management capabilities.

Your role (midwife) holds:

  • Read maternity resources. (maternity.read)
  • Record antenatal visits. (maternity.anc.record)
  • Manage labour — admit the mother to the labour ward and plot the partograph. (maternity.labour.manage)
  • Record the delivery. (maternity.delivery.record)
  • Register the newborn — this mints a new patient UHID and creates the birth record. (maternity.newborn.register)
  • Record newborn immunisations. (maternity.immunisation.record)

A midwife does not issue the birth certificate.

Your role (obstetrician) holds everything the midwife holds, plus:

  • Certify the birth and issue the birth certificate (eSign PIN). (maternity.birth.certify, vital.read, vital.certificate.issue)
  • Manage the maternity module settings and exports. (maternity.manage)

A new UHID is minted automatically when you register a newborn — the baby becomes a patient in their own right.

  1. See antenatal mothers and record each visit in Antenatal (Maternity).
  2. When labour begins, admit the mother to the Labour Ward and plot the Partograph.
  3. Record the Delivery, then register the baby on Newborn — a new UHID is minted and the birth record is created.
  4. An obstetrician opens Birth Certificate, finds the birth record, and Issues it with their eSign PIN. The certificate is signed, locked and rendered to a PDF the parent can download from the portal.
