Release Lab and Imaging Results to the Patient Portal

Who / when: the Portal Coordinator (or the ordering Clinician, for their own patient) makes the deliberate decision to share a result, and the Patient then reads it on the portal. This is the last step of the diagnostic journey — the moment a finished, signed-out result reaches the person it is about.

There are two gates a result must pass before a patient ever sees it. First, a diagnostic professional must verify and sign out the result (a lab scientist for lab values, a radiologist for an imaging report). Second, a member of staff must consciously release it to the portal — the patient-data release gate. Signing a result out and publishing it to the patient are two separate, deliberate acts, so a result a clinician wants to discuss in person can be held back.

  1. Portal Coordinator (or Clinician) — open Portal → Results Delivery. This screen lists released lab and imaging results that are awaiting delivery to the patient.
  2. Portal Coordinator — find the result for your patient. To make it visible, press “Release”. The patient can now see it and download the branded PDF on their portal. If a clinician wants to talk the patient through it first, press “Hold” instead — the result stays invisible to the patient until released later.
  3. Patient — sign in to the patient portal (see Sign In, Reset and Recover a Portal Account). On the portal home, open Results.
  4. Patient — you’ll see a list of your released lab tests and scans. Select one to open it; its details are laid out clearly. (A result appears here only after the release in step 2 — if a recent test isn’t showing yet, it is still with your care team.)
  5. Patient — to keep a copy, open the result and press “Download” to save the branded PDF (a tidy document carrying your clinic’s name). See Download a Released Result as a Branded PDF.

What happens next: the patient now holds the same released result the clinician signed out, as a readable record and a branded PDF they can print or share with another doctor. Nothing leaves the building until the release gate is crossed, and the PDF is rendered on demand from per-tenant encrypted storage, so the document is generated fresh each time rather than sitting in a shared file.
